Sunday Ride

The weatherman said we would get up to sunshine and a predicted high of 80 yesterday so we made plans to ride to Galveston with Bruce and Eileen (the couple that camps beside us at ROT).

We met up with them at the prison farm, rode over to Surfside then took Bluewater Hwy to Galveston. I love to ride that stretch of roadway! It runs right along the Gulf ... probably 75 yards from the water ... and the whole stretch has that salt air, fishy kind of smell. That's one of the things I enjoy about riding so much...enjoying the scents.

Bluewater Hwy had miles destroyed by Ike last year. So lots of the roadway is new, and in those sections, the water is a lot closer to the roadway - and you can tell that at high tide it often covers the roadway. That area used to have really high dunes to protect the road and you only caught glimpses of the water occasionally. Now there isn't a dune anywhere!!

Surfside is the first town that had a huge amount of damage from Ike and the closer you get to Galveston, the more damage you see. Its been a year and even though tremendous amounts of restoration has taken place, its amazing how many places are still in severe disrepair or ruin. Its a sad thing. So many houses wound up on public beach and the homeowners lost their homes. The law is very strict about where state lines run and hurricanes can change those lines and the homeowners loose their homes and land. If you don't live on the coast, you may not realize how many homeowners filled lawsuits homeowners filed contesting the law but Texas has an Open Beaches law that protects the publics right to open beaches. In fact, the lawsuits - which many feel encroaches on the public's right to the beaches - are what prompted this months overwhelming passage of an Amendment to the Texas State Constitution insuring Open Beaches. Unfortunately, those who build beachouses know the law when they build, and sad as it is, they often times come out on the losing end when storms hit.

Anyway, we rode over the San Luis Pass Toll Bridge onto Galveston Island. Jamaica Beach still show heavy, heavy damage in areas. But Woody's, as many of you know, is back up and operational, fully restored. We stopped by but nobody wanted to drink, just potty, so we did. Then when we left I saw a big sign that said "No Public Bathrooms". lol

We came up the Galveston Seawall to The Spot and ate on the outdoor balcony. Tim and I got a burger and fries - they got a burger and fried mushrooms...we shared our side orders with each other ...... and the birds. Then after us and the birds ate, there was a sign that said, "Please don't feed the birds, they aren't potty trained". Oops! We had problems with reading signs BEFORE we broke the rules! lol. The food was really good. It was my first time to eat there but I feel like I go all the time. There is a webcam there and we check it all the time to see what's happening on the Seawall so it was nice to actually eat there.

We took the ferry over to Port Boliver. The plan was for us to cross over, ride as far as it took for the guys to smoke their cigarettes, turn around come back and take the ferry back over to Galveston. But, when we got off the ferry, they said, forget it, made a upturn and we caught the same ferry we just got off of back over the Island. It was so much fun. There are so many birds right now!! There were pelicans, seagulls, ducks of all kinds and lots I have no idea what they were. And the dolphins were so active! I love to see them breach the water and dive back down. There were probably 15-20 pods on the round trip. And the seagulls!! They get behind the ferry and catch the stunned fish....there were probably a hundred or more! Eileen took a picture, if it turns out, I'll post it.

We rode home a different way, stopped at Cruiser's (a biker icehouse on 2004), had a Bud Light Lime then we rode back home. It was so much fun. When they took the turn to their house, Bruce and Tim did a fist bump...and all I could think of was Dudley in Wild Hogs. Luckily, their bump didn't have the same results. lol

Yesterday was awesome. It was restoration for the soul.

2010 Music Request

OK,

While we await the email notices for RV spots, is it too early to start the thread on who we'd like to hear at ROT 2010? C'mon...next to a firearm under the Christmas tree, is there anything better than confirmation you've got your spot AND you're going to hear your favorite group(s)?

So, here goes:

Toby Keith--he rides; he was GREAT at Sturgis (rocked the stage versus falling off of it); appeals to young and old...rock and country. My first pick.

And for a change of pace, how about a female artist: Taylor Swift (no worries of a rapper interrupting her at ROT) or maybe Gretchin Wilson who is now on the "Redneck Records" label and has that 'bad girl' rocker/party image.

Never too early to start the wish list. Heck, ZZ has already confirmed their August appearance at Sturgis.

Anyone else? Let's start the list...Bob might be able to turn some into appearances!

Help with xmas gift

Hey all, I needs some help. I want to buy Eric a new rear fender for his 01 dyna wide glide. Heres the thing... he wants a street sweeper (not even sure if that is the right word for it). I want it to be a surprise so I can't every well ask him how to get one lol. So any of you know what I need to look for? Like do I just have to get something that will fit an 01? It does not need to be painted or anything like that because he is repainting his bike here soon. So any help please boys and girls. Also do you know any place to get one on the cheap side? Thanks y'all and oh yeah HI its been a while since I was here.

Even if you don't have any local elections on the ballot, there are 11 proposed Ammendments to our State's constitution and lots of bond issues throughtout the state. Let your voice be heard.

Please vote YES for Prop 9!! Keep Texas beaches open!!

Sad News

We had a faithful ROT attendee killed in a head on collision in Corpus Christi. A doped up driver was going the wrong way in a truck and hit our friends car head on.
He was a very nice guy and a friend to many, he will be missed. Keep his family in your prayers.

69th Daytona

Our group in NW Florida are planning on a trip to the 69th Daytona rally. Beside Scooter (we'll get the details to join up later), anyone else contemplating a March warm up for ROT?

Still in the planning...looking for where we'll stay. Was looking to stay near Destination Daytona, but it seems both Arlen Ness and the Triumph/Ducati dealerships have all departed that locale. Will probably find somewhere near main and Hwy 1A downtown.

If any other ROT riders will be there, give a shout and we'll try to meet up.

Sturgis and the ROT

Just wondering who else on the forum ventured up to Sturgis this year. Since it was the 69th Sturgis, we took two RVs, tents, seven bikes and 12 riders/passengers. Half stayed at the Buffalo Chip; the other up in Deadwood. We got two RV spots side-by-side on Stage Hill overlooking the main stage area--you could see (and hear) the bands from the ground level and even better up on the roofs. We took our cart expecting (from all we'd heard) to see a parade route that was even 'wilder' than the ROT. Sad to say that while the RV area was HUGE, there was no parade route, just parade route watchers (signs, small stages, etc); nothing even remotely close to the ROT--quite a disappointment. The bands the first few night weren't that bad: George Thorogood, Toby Keith (Best of the Group) and Billy Squier (who was really pretty good). Of course, Aerosmith was the big draw--and if you've seen U-Tube, you know Steve Tyler did the "Buffalo Slip" off the stage after the sound system blew up the ninth song, ending the concert (and their tour). After that, the bands got 'younger', louder, with profanity to make a sailor blush. Sturgis supposedly tried to 'market' to a younger crowd with 'younger' bands, but between the bad weather (can you say lemon-sized hail on the last day?) and poor band selection, they lost most of the attendees earlier than normal.

So...won't go back there again until maybe the 75th. The rides through the mountains were fun and memorable...but filled that square and don't need to do it again anytime soon.

Anyone else venture up north??? Just curious.

Looking for Parts

My boss is looking for this part. I just pasted the e-mail he sent me in here. This is what he said. I want to get this part for him for his b day next month. Top is helping me try to find it to. Till then all he can do is look at it unless we spay the stuff in the carb so he can hear it run, lol. It has been in his family for 3 generation's. The motor on the bike has been bored out (we think) if that helps but every thing else has been kept original.

Now I found the part on Bike Bandit.Com but they don't carry it no more in inventory or able to pick some up.

Here is the OEM # 405 Rub Sleeve For the Steel Gas line hook up from the Petcock to the Carb.
Bike Bandit Part # 1667060-001

Now I will need 2 for sure but would like 4 total for replacements.

This fits on the following:

1959 Harley Davidson FLH Duo Glide 1349cc
Note: This bike used to have a Side Car Originally.Thus, the size engine & make up of the bike.
